The Virginia Model: Deprivations and Targeting of Mental Health

Prison Radio Commentary

The text below is presented as a first-person commentary by David Annarelli. Claims and conclusions are the author’s.

Why UPROAR is sharing this

  • First-person reporting from inside VADOC dormitory conditions (Haynesville).
  • Describes environmental stressors that can exacerbate mental-health crises (overcrowding, noise/light, lack of privacy).
  • Raises oversight and compliance concerns (PREA shower privacy, body-camera usage, “bed compliance” enforcement).

Full commentary

There is a certain malevolence about the formation of social orders, a profound struggle, with despotism on one end and slavery on the other. A Lawful evil Virginia DOC has linked both wrongs together.

The Virginia Dept. of Corruptions is a paragon of destruction, specifically in the realms of mental-health care. Forty-six percent of Virginia’s captives are diagnosed with moderate-to-severe mental-health issues. That number climbs to 68% when mild diagnoses are added to the cohort, and when undiagnosed cases are considered the number ranges to 77%. This does not include those on the autism spectrum of which numerous are visible attempting to navigate the hellish landscape of one of the worst DOCs in the US. Nowhere is the lack of care and concern for those with mental-health issues more obvious, and an openly dangerous threat, than in Virginia’s DOC dormitories. This is the Virginia Model.

Dillwyn, Coffeewood, St. Brides, here at Haynesville (where I report from) and the rest of the DOC’s dorms: These are environments of perpetual mental-health crisis. Eighty people are crammed into a space too small to support 20 people. With zero personal space to speak of, 24 hours of light and noise, Virginia’s DOC dorms will drive any normal person into a state of hypervigilance and psychological crisis. When you do that to people who already struggle with a mental-health issue—and often multiple diagnoses — the problem becomes severe, rapidly.

Eighty people are forced to share 4 toilets when the need to sit arises. The showers are not compliant to Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards so by necessity captives are forced to share a single shower. Many are not even comfortable with that situation and so only shower at odd times, or simply don’t shower at all. Again, it is a situation that creates psychological crisis, and compounds preexisting ones.

Always, there are those 3-4 captives who are absolutely despicable and worthless drains on civilization. In a dorm environment there is no way to avoid or get away from them, and as always Virginia DOC staff do nothing to address those things as obvious problems. A prime example of this are the jerks who refuse to use headphones to listen to music or their TVs. I have debilitating anxiety issues – among a litany of psych diagnoses – and wearing earphones leaves me on a constant edge of panic attacks as sharp loud noises cut through whatever it is I am listening to… I wear them anyway because respect and consideration for the other 80 people is paramount… those other 3-4 jerks not only couldn’t give a damn but also believe just the opposite: that being in a dorm gives them some sort of justification for being a piece of filth and human garbage. Then others get annoyed and turn their TVs and radios loose. As I write this, I am watching my own TV… and I can hear two separate songs and 4 more separate shows besides… imagine that level of schizophrenic activity all day long… then imagine it with traumatic brain injury and subsequent concussion symptoms that the Virginia DOC has ignored… struggle is a word.

Example of a “petty rule” focus

A big part of the problem, other than overcrowding, is the Virginia DOCs focus on all the wrong things. An example of such nonsensical foci is “bed compliance.” This is the rule that says you cannot be under a blanket after 8 am. Sick or cold? Well that’s just too bad. However, take your blanket off and cover up with a jacket and a towel, all is well. This proves the rule is about causing suffering.

It also explains why, in the Virginia DOC, and especially dormitories, drug use is widespread and unchecked. The Virginia Model is about petty rules, manufactured by equally petty tyrants, who thrive on vindictive acts of abuse that the state allows to go unchecked. In fact, and as I continue to report, the lawless behaviors of Virginia DOC staff is actually more widespread than the drug use among captives desperate to forget the hell of daily DOC life.

A simple example of the lawlessness of staff is body cameras. Here at Haynesville, I have never seen a body camera turned on and they visually link red when active. This is a problem at every VADOC hellhole, all 37 of them. A massive waste of taxpayer dollars in a state that is rapidly failing on every front. You can, justifiably, put at least some of that blame on the Virginia DOC… They’re bitching about blankets and claiming a safer society?

This is, actually, a deliberate effort, the targeting of those with mental-health issues for slow destruction and death. It is a documented aspect of the centuries-old Virginia Model of eugenics. That Virginia Model is still very much in action. It is a model that was so successful in its destruction of indigenous peoples and those first captives kidnapped from Africa that one of the most infamous villains in all of history borrowed it. Hitler. Hitler based his plans, which developed to a point of 11 million total dead, on the Virginia Model. That model is still at work, the basis of the entire Virginia DOC. That is a historical fact, and I challenge you to look it up. This is how Virginia cares for those of us with mental-health issues, with bad science from a couple hundred years ago.

The Virginia Model: It’s a threat to the world, also a historical fact, and a current one that should likely be addressed in a manner similar to how the Virginia Model was shut down in 1945. Or we can wait for the Virginia Model to kill some more people, however slowly they do it.
