Why we made this newsletter

“As our numbers grow, we’re developing greater tactical agility and organizational capacity — and stand to become a force of genuine change for the imprisoned.” — Kevin “Rashid” Johnson

Virginia’s prison system runs on isolation, retaliation, and narrative control. Families are cut off, records disappear, and every crisis is framed as an “isolated incident.” The Fire Inside is a printable, shareable record meant to break the blackout, connect struggles across facilities, and help families and supporters build power together.

Issue #1 is a first-year snapshot — our organizing, our reporting, and inside writings — and an invitation to plug in.

What’s inside Issue #1

  • Rashid’s editorial: why families and prisoners’ loved ones organizing together is the only force that can break the cycle of cover-ups.
  • A year-in-review snapshot: key moments from UPROAR’s first year building a union of prisoners’ loved ones in Virginia.
  • Reporting + analysis: a record you can hand to someone who keeps asking “what’s happening?” and “what can I do?”
  • Inside writings: voices and political clarity from the people living the conditions the system tries to hide.

This newsletter is designed to be printed and passed hand-to-hand — at meetings, tabling, church networks, neighborhood spaces, and family circles. If you want copies for an event or to circulate in your community, email us: uproar1966@proton.me.
